I can’t help but suspect Hazel is the least sympathetic character because she is the member of the cast who most closely resembles the author..

.. which is not to say I think Danielle Corsetto is a dick! Far from it – I love GWS with many big hearts – I just think Hazel gets a hard time because Ms. Corsetto is casting a very tough critical eye upon herself.

Personally, I think Hazel is a very believable character and she’d be someone I’d be proud to have as a friend. Hell, perhaps I see a little of Hazel in myself to… :)

It is one of the few comics I read daily. Like the characters and need to break down and buy some of the earlier books. I am a relatively new convert.

Joshua, I guess for me, having Zach care about Hazel makes her have some good qualities, somewhere, even if we don’t see them. :) But I take your point, and I don’t disagree, exactly.

I *love* Girls With Slingshots!!! I honestly think Corsetto is one of the most talented people working in comics. I think her character drawings are on par with Jamie Hernandez for body structure and composition. Speaking of characters I think are real and wonderful – McPedro! ^_^ That little dude cracks me up!

As I said, I like the strip, and it’s well-written or I wouldn’t be thinking about what kind of person Hazel is…but I prefer the strips that focus on just about any other character.

Joshua, that’s an interesting observation. I hadn’t noticed that, I think because I see recognizable qualities in Hazel that makes her real. Then again, who told Candy to quit picking on Maureen when they first met?

I like Girls With Slingshots, but I find Hazel pretty tiresome. I keep expecting the rest of the cast to realize that, oh, wait, Hazel is that friend you hung out with because you found yourself in the same crowd but one day you notice that she’s never actually done anything to justify the title of friend. If Hazel has ever put anybody else first I’ve forgotten about it; I remember the strip where she accidentally switches the presents intended for Jamie and her mom (I think it was) and for the first time ends up giving presents they actually like.
