Yeah, I get having to streamline the story and I even get backing off of the geopolitics. But I think the movie would have been more suspenseful, and structurally sounder, if the origin had unfolded more like it does in the comic. I've heard it suggested that it the point was to make the movie lighter overall, but I'm not sure how blowing up a bunch of kids in the first ten minutes does that -- and, like I said, it almost made me walk out.

Me neither. I don't get most of DC's thought processes though, indeed, I wonder if there is much thought put into them at all.

Also, you noted something in your review that I also did. In the book it seemed very much that, though one of their goals was getting their lives back, it was also about getting justice for the children, and the other innocents that Max has killed in his time. However, while some lip-service was given to the kids' death in the movie, it seemed to be very much a mission of revenge, "This guy tried to kill us, so we gotta kill him....oh yeah there were those kids too." However, the book did have much more time to tease out their origin story, but I do think it was handled almost as an afterthought.

Great review, the movie was a lot of fun, ever since watching it, my girlfriend will randomly shout, "Go Petunias!".

Though I agree that that Warner failed to sell the movie well, especially as they got the jump on the similarly themed A-Team & The Expendables, at least DC had the first omnibus volume out well before the movie. While I understand it would be best if they had both out now, not a lot of the movie-goers are going to run out and buy the entire series in one go.

I look forward to picking this up on DVD as the rewatchability seems to be high.

You know, I almost wondered if having the book and the DVD available around the same time was part of WB's strategy, but then with the way this movie was (not) marketed, I'm not sure I can give them credit for having a strategy.

Anyway, I'm glad I was lucky enough to find those TPB's because they're pretty spiffy.

After reading your comments, the DVD is definitely on my buy list. Given that the release timeframe has shrunk to three months, maybe it will be out around the time the second omnibus is available?

Johanna, thanks so much for the opportunity to write this!

I'm really hoping this DVD ends up finding its audience. It's definitely not a movie that is going to appeal to everyone (hence my "cult" thought) but I have found it appeals to a lot of people who might not normally think they like that kind of thing. Now, for me, I'll admit this is exactly the kind of thing I do like. I'll probably see ALL of those A-Team knockoffs!
