Budget for Good Books: Comics Out August 11

On weeks when Viz releases manga, I find my $15 budget picks both easy and hard. Easy, because their manga purchases take up most or all of the money; hard, because I have to limit myself to only one or two volumes. Still, that’s a good way to focus on the good stuff and truly appreciate the worlds these stories create.
This week, top of my list is Ooku: The Inner Chambers Book 4. I adore this alternate history series about an historical Japan where most of the men have died. Others have complained about the faux-Shakespearean take on the translation, but I love the flavor. For me, it adds to the period feel.
If the language or concept is too big a stumbling block for you, then here’s a second choice: 20th Century Boys Book 10, the latest chapter of the epic by Naoki Urasawa. It’s a sprawling adventure involving secret societies, giant robots, rock ‘n’ roll, and how you handle growing up and taking responsibility for making a difference.
Both books are also reminders that it’s a good thing that I’m going on vacation soon, since I still have to read Ooku 3 and 20th Century Boys 8 and 9 as well as these new volumes! Time for some great reading catchup.
