My Dad, Philip 'Tex' Blaisdell, one of the great original dinosaurs of the cartoon world, worked with Will Eisner on The Spirit in the early days. As kids, my brother & I loved reading the old Spirit comics; still do. I'm wondering if any of the current printings include my Dad's work, & how I'd be able to find that out....

Oh, yeah, <a href="http://comicsworthreading.com/2007/12/13/the-spirit-book-one-recommended/" rel="nofollow">Cooke's Spirit</a> was a great read.
I quite liked the Darwyn Cooke run, but yeah, everything after that has felt like a "Why bother?" affair. As you say, the Spirit is a cipher -- Alan Moore commented, about the movie, that The Spirit was never about Denny Colt fighting crime from a graveyard, it was about panels on a page. Eisner was a genius at layouts -- I remember thinking he would have approved of the Google logo Pac-Man game.
