I love Colleen. You don't usually see someone as up front about the business and as in your face about it outside of maybe Jim Shooter.

I would be curious to know if there was any negative blowback from her "101 things your publisher doesn't want you to know" or "very bad publishers". It seems like a lot of these artists and writers play it close to the vest much of the time. Even Waid has been very cagey about his "upcoming plans" for the industry (I wonder what Colleen has to say about that whole Harvey Awards thing). I read ADS when it first came out and now I'm reading it to my youngest daughter (my oldest hates comic books, sigh)

Anyways, thanks for this interview. Very entertaining.

Lovely interview, jammed to the gills with insight. I was taken aback by this bit, however:

"Almost every webcomics cartoonist strongly advised me to avoid interacting with the audience and to avoid blogging. Regardless, since I began the webcomic and new blog last year, my traffic has gone up tenfold."

Every successful webcartoonist — which is to say financially self-sufficient from their comics — whom I've spoken with (and, in fact, every website marketing article I've ever seen) espouses the importance of turning your webcomic's site into a community BY interacting with the audience and blogging.

The advice she was given just seems so counterintuitive, and Mr. Doran's conclusion to be so obvious.

Well, thank you. I do wish I had ideas like this more often, in terms of interesting people to interview with takes on subjects that haven't been talked about enough.

This is a great interview! Colleen is one of my heroes, and I finally got to meet her at the American Library Association Annual Conference in June. I also know Barry Lyga, and I'm thrilled that they're working together on a graphic novel, can't wait to read it!

It's a wonderful interview only because Colleen had such interesting things to say. I'm glad you enjoyed reading it, but I can't take credit for simply sending a couple of emails. Thanks for sharing your story.

I had the chance to meet Colleen at the comic book store I worked in during graduate school. She came and did a signing and while I didn't get to spend much time talking with her--pesky customers, shelves to restock, and all--I remember being very impressed with her. To be honest, I haven't followed much of her work. I tried a couple of times to get into A Distant Soil, but never could crack it. I might see if the library here in Boulder has a copy. Anyway, though I am not an artist, I appreciated her candor and her obvious dedication not only to her career, but also to helping out other artists. Now I will look at the framed, autographed print of hers that hangs in my office with even more respect--it's a pretty awesome drawing of Arthur discovering the Holy Grail. Thanks for the great interview Johanna.
