Interesting that its Image that is putting out the BattleChasers collection. It was originally under the Jim Lee, Wildstorm imprint ... I think Homage?

I remember reading it for the first time when I started getting the DC comp box just as DC aquired it. I thought it actually had an ending.. with the bad robot/guy whatever being destroyed.. run off.

Castle Waiting V. 2 is a great to hear of! Question though, is this the first collection of her new stuff through Fantagraphics or is it the second? I'm afraid I got behind...

Johanna:

Echo is a really interesting twist on Captain Atom, IMO (this may mean more to me as a fan of both Ditko and Captain Atom than to others perhaps).

I hope that doesn't make it sound like a rip off or that it doesn't still have a lot of originality and complexity to it, because it does. It's one of the more refreshing takes on the old "regular person accidentally becomes superhero" formula that I've seen in a while. It has really enjoyable characters. Everyone, the villains, and even those with smaller roles or those who might only appear in several panels are interesting in some way.

The issues are only 17 or 18 pages, but there is more story and character development in one issue of Echo than in an entire Marvel or DC event/crossover (Hopefully that didn't sound like a back handed compliment). Also the art is very easy on the eyes. The characters look like real people with actual facial expressions that matches the dialogue that comes out of their mouths.

Just a lot of fun. I'll be sorry to see the story end. But Echo has made me want to revisit SiP again.

Johanna, I believe you mentioned a pair of reasons. :-P

I also enjoy Echo (I'm buying the trades rather than the floppies), though not as much as SiP. It differs from Big Two comics in that there's more emphasis on character than on superheroics (the main character reacts to her powers in a more realistic manner than most "superheroes"), and of course there're no multi-decade multi-title multi-creator continuity issues. Also, I love Terry's art.

Chris, I never knew why anyone would spend money on anything Joe Mad did, so I can't help with that. :)

Grant, I suspect SiP stood out for being something different at the time, but Echo seems more traditionally superheroic. What do you enjoy about it?

Thanks for mentioning Echo. I was always a fan of Moores art, but never really got into SIP when it first came out. But I really enjoy Echo and never really see any reviews for it or hear any mention of it at all.

It's a terrific read and I have to say, with very few exceptions it's one of the most entertaining stories I've read in probably 15 years. I didn't discover it until issue 13 and quickly bought the trades. I couldn't wait for the 5th collection so I bought the individual issues. I'll be sad to see the story end and I look forward to a cool omnibus of the series. Thanks again.

I have all the three self-published Sinfest volumes, so I hope that Viva La Resistance is in effect Volume 4, with all new material. Otherwise I'll have to think twice before spending money on it.

I wonder who'd want to spend $100 on a complete collection of a series (Battle Chasers) that is not complete? New readers? Old readers who already have the floppies?

Yes, I'm very much looking forward to your book, too, but wasn't it solicited last month? I skipped doing a writeup back then, my oversight.

Of all of these graphic novels, the one I'm most excited about is Castle Waiting. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, I don't love about that series.

And Hereville comes out in November, as well. Just mentioning. Not that I'm biased or anything. :-D
