It does become a vicious cycle, doesn't it? People don't sign on to watching a series for fear of getting burned, so the ratings aren't high, so the show gets cancelled, so viewers think "I was right not to try it." And it all repeats again. Rather like the situation of comics/trade collections, too.

I'm likewise sick of being screwed by serial genre television being cancelled before any sort of conclusion. My wife loved INVASION and it ended on a cliffhanger. JOURNEYMAN was one of my favorite shows ever - and it died (and likely would have been canned sooner if not for the writer's strike). It's almost like they're baiting us to ignore a show until the DVDs come out.

Defying Gravity was another show that ABC screwed over. Don't know why they do this to themselves.

My Wife and I loved Defying Gravity, but unfortunately found it too late, and it was already cancelled. Fortunately the entire season, including previously unreleased episodes, is available on the DVD. The show just left us wanting soooo much more, and we've joined a group of fans that are asking for some sort of closure. Hey, Farscape came back, at least for one final movie.

As for FlashForward, I had read the short story, then the novel, so wondered just how they were going to present the story to us on television. I did enjoy it, and watched it to the end, but it didn't bother me too much that it ended.

That's the problem, if viewers feel dissatisfied by mystery shows: they poison the well for future projects. Fans who are burned don't want to invest their time and attention only to risk it happening again.

I really wanted to like it too - and consider it a fun ride. But I'll tell you, after Invasion and now FF, I don't want to even try NBC's EVENT. Seems like a losing investment.
I feel like the guy who's ready to swear off love after a few bad relationships.....

KC says: That's a good comment. By the time the show returned, I'd gotten a little tired of it, and you're right about other characters being more involving.

My wife and I watched the final 10 episodes on the DVR this week, and the show really did get better after it came back from hiatus, but it just wasn't enough. Those early episodes that crawled towards the most minute of revelations were just painful. Once they actually got to Somalia and showed how there was more than just the single event, it really got interesting, but by then it was too late.

The post-hiatus episodes also focused less on Joseph Fiennes, which was a good thing. Not sure if it was his acting or the script, but his doe-eyed character became painful to watch. The increased screen time for Christine Woods and Dominic Monaghan was welcome, as they had far more interesting characters.
