James,

The darkness in Amulet wouldn't bother me if there was a correspondence goodness. In Snow White, we have the Dwarves and Snow White herself. In Harry Potter, we have Dumbledore, Hagrid, the Weasleys, McGonagall, etc. There are no such characters in Amulet. It lacks that balance.

I've only read the first volume, and thought it was interesting and want to read more. I think the reason here are no pure good characters for Emily to look towards, is that they would come off too much as parental figures.

I think we are supposed to hope and root for Emily and company to be able to make the right decisions for themselves.

As for the darkness? Honestly most of the best and long lasting children's work has some level of darkness to it. Be it Snow White (hunter instructed to bring back her heart) to Goldilocks (breaking and entering, theft) or today's Harry Potter.(parents killed brutally, abusive foster family and then all the deaths in the final volume especially) If good wins in the end, then the sacrifices made to achieve it hold more weight I think.
