Favorite costume ever, and probably the first one I did all the work on myself, was my first year in college. There was a Halloween costume dance with prizes. I bought jumbo-sized pumpkin, hollowed it out from the bottom instead of the top, carved a face in it, and wore the whole thing as a mask. Wore a suit and tie to go with it -- probably looked like an early version of Jack Skellington...

Thanks for yet another great contest! My favorite costume is something that takes very little preparation and effort. I dressed up as Asian Clark Kent, which only requires wearing a Superman T-shirt under a suit and tie. Just keep a couple of buttons open under the tie, and take off my glasses and pull open the shirt to reveal the logo.

My favorite Halloween costumes are not my own, but those of my 5 year old son. At age 3, he decided he wanted to be Static--mind you, he is 1/4 hispanic, 3/4 anglo with thin, light brown hair. Didn't matter to him--we put together a static costume and though no one knew who he was, he was happy to tell everyone that he was his favorite super hero, Static. At age 4, he decided to go as James, Captain America's son from the movie Next Avengers. Again, we put together a costume, complete with a Captain America shield and he spent all evening explaining to people that he wasn't Captain America, he was his son. This year, he's going as Luke Skywalker from Episode 5.

I think my favorite Halloween costume was from when I was in kindergarten and went as Batman. It was just one of those cheesey, store-bought Ben Cooper costumes that were essentially a plastic trash bag with a character logo printed on the chest, and an uncomfortable hard plastic mask.

But it was a favorite because I showed up at school for their Halloween party, only to discover that my best friend at the time was wearing the exact same costume! I was thrilled to make a connection with somebody like that. "Wow! You like Batman, too?"

For good or ill, that's never happened since then.

One of my favorite costumes recently (and likely geekiest) was Death from The Sandman. I raided my closet, haunted thrift stores, and raked through lots of Halloween merchandise to find the perfect outfit. Then I had to find some good gothic make-up, which I did at Hot Topic. Add a large black umbrella and it was complete. Sadly, no one at the library I work at knew who I was, but it was a great opportunity to show them the books!
