Webcomic List Awards Nominations Open

The Webcomic List, a rather busy webcomic portal site and forum, has announced that nominations are now open for the 2010 Webcomic List Awards. From the release:

Launched last year to replace the now defunct Web Cartoonists’ Choice Awards, the Webcomic List Awards exist to recognise the best that online comics have to offer. Nominations are open to everyone involved in the creation, promotion or distribution of comics.

Categories include best comic, best new comic, various flavors of best art (colour, as the UK-based site has it; black-and-white; non-traditional, which means other than typically drawn), writing, character, best gag-a-day comic, and best longform comic.

Nominations are open until the 20th of December. If you qualify, you can nominate up to three comics in each category. These awards do things in the opposite way than I’m used to; the nomination phase is the popularity part of the contest, with the winners picked by a panel of judges from the most-nominated comics. Winners will be announced on January 31 in an “online illustrated ceremony”. That sounds intriguing.

Update: (2/4/11) Here’s the webcomic of winners. If you don’t want to read it all to find out who was recognized, Brigid Alverson listed the winners.
