Here are some hits of optimism, from two great writers about comics, who coincidentally share inititals:
David Welsh uses the idea of suggesting manga Eisner Award nominees to mention some of the many wonderful manga we we able to read this past year.
Douglas Wolk reminds us of ten anticipated comics that have been announced in various ways but we haven’t seen yet from some of the acknowledged masters of the medium. Wolk also wraps up the year with a wide-ranging list of things he’s grateful for, from the renaissance of small-press comic conventions to great design to cheap back issues to the benefits of creator rights to this pairing, my favorite:
*There is now an entire generation of art cartoonists to whom superhero comics are not an implacable oppressor but simply irrelevant. That is awesome.
*There is also now an entire generation of art cartoonists to whom superhero comics are really, really important. That is also awesome.
