Good Comics Out December 29: Aria Returns, Diamond Video

Wow, this is hard to do weekly. It’s been a month since I last discussed the weekly comic shopping list, and here we are at the last new comic day of 2010.
As a result, shipping is light — it’s the holidays, people are away from their usual comic shop, and lots of the big books came out earlier this month for Christmas shopping. There is one must-buy for me, though — the new volume of Aria, Book 6 (Tokyopop, $10.99), is due out.
Also coming from Tokyopop is Karakuri Odette Volume 5, but since I just got Volume 4 and haven’t read it yet, and more because the price on this new book went up $2 ($12.99 for the standard manga digest, same format as the previous book at $10.99), I may end up dropping that series. On the other hand, it seems a rotten time to do that, given that it will be the focus of the next Manga Moveable Feast in just a few weeks.
Also out this week: NBM’s The Story of Lee ($11.99) looks promising, a global manga about a cross-cultural love affair. I’d like to flip through it first, though, just to see what the art looks like, so I hope my retailer decided to order one for the shelf. I also hope he got in some of the Marvel 2011 promotional calendars — I’ve been using the previous year’s version to scribble project dates on at work. It’s handy for that.
And don’t forget, Grundy dies in Life With Archie: The Married Life #6 (Archie Comics, $3.99).
One last question: why would anyone order videos from Diamond unless they were getting a hefty store discount? I noticed among the titles they’re shipping this week the following:
- DC Showcase Superman & Shazam Return of Black Adam Blu-ray — which came out November 9
- Doctor Who 2010 Blu-ray Season 5 — which also came out November 9
- Inception Blu-ray — which at least came out this month, December 7

I’m certainly curious about your take on Karikuri Odette 4 and 5.
It’s not the best series ever written, but I found the characters compelling enough to keep reading.

Speaking of Dr. Who, that christmas special was awesome. So was the “Dr. Who Proms”. Hope the latter turns up as a special feature on their next season collection.
