Well, the appeal of There's Always A Woman is more Blondell than Douglas. I love Joan Blondell and think she's probably one of the most underrated comediennes of the classic era. There's a great scene in the movie where Douglas, a DA subjects her to full on 3rd degree interrogation by thuggish cops and she remains happily oblivious, doing her nails and all smiles as her interrogaters start to crack. So funny. You're right, definitely an effort to cash in on the Thin Man dynamic, but much more broad in its humor.

Oh, I think I may have tried to watch that once. (I wasn't familiar with the title, but after I looked it up, I realized it was one of those wannabe-Thin Man couple detective things. For more Douglas, I prefer Theodora Goes Wild, which is amazing, or Too Many Husbands, with the great Jean Arthur and Fred MacMurray.

I caught this on TCM a while back. It was okay. For a really fun movie with Douglas, keep a look out on TCM for "There's Always A Woman" with Joan Blondell and Mary Astor. It's a riot.

Douglas was terrific in HUD. Patricia Neal was even better.
