Dylan Dog: Dead of Night Movie Stars Brandon Routh

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night poster

Dylan Dog, the very popular Italian comic series published in English by Dark Horse as The Dylan Dog Case Files, has a movie adaptation coming out! Dylan Dog: Dead of Night stars Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, Chuck) as the paranormal investigator in New Orleans. Also appearing in the film are Sam Huntington (who was also in Superman Returns as Jimmy Olsen) and Taye Diggs. The film is from Platinum Studios (Cowboys & Aliens).

I had no idea this movie was due out next month (U.S. release date of April 29), but this oddly written production blog suggests some strange behind-the-scenes happenings, as well as a delayed release from last year, which might explain the lack of promotion. The blend of horror and comedy looks amusing, and I like Routh. Here’s the trailer; what do you think?

I’ve never heard of the comic, but after Routh’s great job on Chuck (made me wish he’d had more to do in Superman Returns) I’ll have to look for this.

I don’t understand why Hollywood keeps buying rights to awesome comics and turning them into turds for the screen. I’m not an avid Dylan Dog reader but from what I have read I can tell that this retains none of the look or feel of the comic. Maybe the movie will be better than the trailer but right now it looks like a vodka commercial with zombies.

With so few people familiar with Dylan Dog in the U.S., I suspect “fidelity to the source material” wasn’t high on the priority list. Once we’ve gotten a chance to see the movie, I’d love to hear more about what was the same/different with the comic.
