Time for me to subscribe to Starz, I think.
Captain Jack's new coat
The premium channel has teamed up with the BBC to co-produce Torchwood: Miracle Day. This fourth series of episodes for the Doctor Who spin-off debuts in the U.S. on Friday, July 8, at 10 PM ET.
The premise revolves around sudden immortality for everyone. People age, get hurt, or sick, but no one dies, which becomes a huge problem for world resources, thus bringing Torchwood to the CIA’s attention. Torchwood regulars John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness and Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper team up with Mekhi Phifer as CIA agent Rex Matheson. The cast also includes Bill Pullman, Lauren Ambrose, Alexa Havins, Dichen Lachman (my fave Sierra from Dollhouse), and Kai Owen as Gwen’s husband. It’s planned to run 10 episodes, with most of it shot in Los Angeles. Here’s the trailer, with some shocking opening scenes:
If you’d like to know more details and spoilers, here’s a writeup of a panel with show creator Russell T. Davies. In the meantime, notice also that, due to the location change and the resultant weather, they’ve redesigned Captain Jack’s coat, taking it to a more modern cut and a cashmere-blend wool. I love this quote by costume designer Shawna Trpcic, when asked if she was nervous about revamping Captain Jack’s famous jacket:
“Well, I worked on Firefly, so I’m kind of used to iconic captain’s coats and the importance of staying loyal to what the fans expect and to what we need.”
