Marvel Announces Avengers 1959

Avengers 1959 cover

Hey, a new Marvel title I’m looking forward to! Yes, it’s yet another Avengers book, making this the sixth, after Regular, Secret, New, Academy, and Ultimate (and not even counting the occasional spinoff like Pet). And yes, it’s only a five-issue miniseries. But it’s Howard Chaykin writing and drawing a story set in the 50s! And we’ve already gotten some tastes of the approach, with fill-in segments previously appearing in New Avengers.

Here’s the press release copy (with various corrections and proofreading done):

A unique team of super-powered individuals of the post-World War II era, including Sabretooth, Kraven the Hunter, and Namora, must combat threats in New York, Madripoor, and everywhere in between!

“I’m grabbing what feels like a brass ring here, with the opportunity to do an untold story of the lost years of the Marvel Universe,” explained Chaykin. “[W]e’ll follow Nick Fury and his Avengers around the world as they track down and take down super-powered survivors of the Third Reich — as their every effort is countermanded by a mysterious agency with a dark agenda of its own.”

It’s promised to be “action-packed” and will be available in October for $2.99 an issue.

I’ve always liked Dominic Fortune, the few stories I’ve seen, so I’m looking forward to it. And a focused, limited Chaykin story works for me. I think he tends to get lost in the narrative with on-going series, so just telling a story and then getting out is a solid approach.

Chaykin does well with period settings so this should be fun. And it’s cool to see Blonde Phantom on the team. But no Sun Girl? Bummer!
