Inspector Ishida first appeared in the two-part “Hairpin Murders” in Usagi Yojimbo vol. 3 (Dark Horse series) #26–27, then again almost right away in “Taméshigiri” in #30. Those stories are both collected in Usagi Yojimbo Book 13: Grey Shadows, in which Ishida appears on the cover.

Ishida next appears in the solo story (no Usagi, though other supporting characters appear) “After the Rat” in Usagi #77. It’s reprinted in Usagi Yojimbo Book 20: Glimpses of Death. I think that’s it before Murder at the Inn.
