Complete Jem and the Holograms Coming to DVD
September 18, 2011

I missed watching this when it first aired, but if I wasn’t knee-deep in backlogged DVDs, I would be very tempted by Jem and the Holograms: The Truly Outrageous Complete Series.

It’s due out October 11 from Shout! Factory, containing 11 discs with all 65 original episodes. (If that’s too much, there will also be a four-disc Season One set.)

The cartoon debuted in 1985 and ran until 1988. It starred Jerrica Benton, who when transformed by keyboard-sporting super-computer Synergy, was also Jem, pop star and leader of the Holograms, “known for her iconic pink hair, star shape earrings, rousing musical numbers, and trend-setting fashion”. They faced off against the punkish Misfits. As the press release says,

With its unique story line combination of drama, action, romance, and music, JEM and the Holograms was a smash hit and became an icon for a decade. Its message of glamour, glitter, fashion, and fame helped define a generation!

Bonus features on the Complete Series DVD set include:

  • Retrospective featurettes, including brand-new interviews with the cast, crew, and fans!
  • Original toy commercials (cause you couldn’t be a cartoon in the 80s without tie-in toys)
  • Video jukebox
  • Animated storyboards
  • Original writer’s bible

Here are the opening credits, for an instant flashback. You’ll get the song stuck in your head all day!

Will probably get this for my girlfriend for Christmas and immediately regret it.

The things I do for love.

I was working at Hasbro during this time. The stories behind the scenes at the creation of Jem (to take on Barbie!) were pretty interesting. And funny, if I recall.
