New Usagi collections are always welcome, though I'm always reminded of how very, very far they are behind the single issues. (two years?) It's hard to properly describe the appeal of the series since it sounds so deceptively simple. The expressiveness of the characters, inventiveness of the plots, and the depths the series can reach are not easily conveyed by a quick glance. People really have to trust that you aren't going to steer them wrong to give it a shot.

I found Saya to be a high point as well, despite it being the shortest tale. It's the perfect type of introductory piece for inclusion in a web sampler.

There is a lot of cross pollination between samurai and western films with influences going back and forth across the sea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_(genre)#Influences
