Oh, of course Toy Story was in 3-D. Thank you. I don't know where I picked up the wrong idea that it was Cars 2.

Like you, I think it will be interesting to see where Pixar goes next. The direct-to-video Planes is a first for them; previously, all their releases have been theatrical. That's much more a Disney extend-the-brand thing.

Nice review and overview, thank you. The Cars movies never seemed like my (or my children's) kind of movies and it looks like that continues. Oh well, other Pixar films fill the void.
One correction, I believe Toy Story 3 was the first 3D film Pixar made and this is the second.
I wonder about where Pixar is headed now. Just a niggling feeling, but I could watch almost all of their films with my kids and not worry about any of it until Toy Story 3 where, in addition to the handholding melodrama near the end, I felt really icky about the light gay joke concerning Ken's handwriting at the very end. Why should I have to explain that to my children? Totally unnecessary. Now this film comes out and it seems like a vehicle (no pun intended) for a money grab and not a "Pixar film".
Maybe when Pixar took over Disney pressures came in to do this kind of stuff? Obviously that's pure speculation, but I wonder what the next few films will hold.

"My only caveat was that it maintains some of the problematic gender characterizations of the original films, such as Mrs. Potato Head as a shrill fun-spoiler, or how most of the active toys are male, with the female toys there for decoration."

Indeed, and they don't even have the "But the toys' OWNER is a boy!" excuse anymore.

(Haven't seen the short yet but I did love Kristen Schaal's triceratops character in Toy Story 3.)
