The big flaw in the slaw that is Wizards is that it tends to tell rather than show (via Mike Ploog’s concept art); Bakshi opted for the relative quick fix of rotoscoping…and badly done rotoscoping at that.

I’m pretty sure that it was Wendy Pini (co-creator of Elfquest) who entered the 1977 WorldCon costume contest as Weehawk from Wizards – I was there, and was totally impressed, because she carried a delightfully plump young woman dressed as Elinore all the way down the stage. Because of that, I made my then-fiance (now hubby of 34 years) take me to see the movie. I still own an old VHS tape of it.

apparently there’s a market for this film – Fox Movie Channel has been showing it quite regularly over the last year or so. I didn’t think most people even remembered this movie. Somehow, I saw it in the theater when it was first released – I would have only been 13 or so at the time, but I know that I saw it in a theater the first time. I’ve enjoyed it ever since, even while acknowledging its flaws.
