Third International Comics & Medicine Conference July 2012 in Toronto

Graphic Medicine

Following last year’s successful gathering in Chicago, the third international conference on Comics & Medicine will be held July 22-24, 2012, in Toronto, Canada. They’re looking for suggestions for papers, workshops, and panel discussions. Keynote presenters are Joyce Brabner (Our Cancer Year) and Joyce Farmer (Special Exits). Paul Gravett, noted comic scholar and author, will also host a talk. From the comic organizers:

The idea of “graphic medicine” is that cartooning and healthcare have some interesting intersections and overlap that can benefit both: patients, caregivers, and medical professionals telling their stories and using comics to communicate experiences and information in ways no other medium can.

Proposals in response to the 2012 Toronto Call for Papers are due February 28. Although this is an academic conference, drawing 80-100 people or so, comic creators and scholars are welcome to contribute.
