Top Shelf went digital late last year with a variety of apps and outlets. Now, three months later, they’re making a couple of new announcements.
The first is a digital exclusive, Stuff About Sex… For Guys Who Are Not Like, Total Idiots, by David Mellon. The 26-page black-and-white comic is a combination advice guide and autobiographical comic available for $1.99 through all their outlets. There’s a short preview at that link, as well as information on purchasing digitally. Sex sells, especially online, where no one can see what the cover of the comic you’re reading on your tablet looks like.
Of additional interest is the declaration that they’re lowering their prices. That’s a sensitive subject, with customers often valuing online content less than publishers do, so it’s refreshing to see Top Shelf continuing to experiment to find the sweet spot.
All graphic novels are now $9.99, below that magic $10 price point. That includes some of their thickest books, including the Eddie Campbell omnibus Alec: The Years Have Pants and Alex Robinson’s perennial Box Office Poison. Other graphic novels range from $1.99 to $5.99. Many kids’ comics are available at $2.99 or less, including only 99 cents for the first Owly volume. The full digital catalog can be found at the Top Shelf website.
