Good Comics Out February 22: The Longest-Running US Manga and More

Book of the week for me is the funny Possessions: The Better House Trap by Ray Fawkes (Oni Press, $7.99). Combining a self-important demon and a toddler is a perfect match for supernatural comedy.

Also of note for children, particularly, are the two latest Toon Books ($12.95): Chick and Chickie and the odd science-educational Zig and Wikki in The Cow (yes, that can be read literally, ewwww).

In manga news, with the release of Oh My Goddess! Volume 20 ($11.99), Dark Horse has completed re-releasing the series in “authentic”, non-flipped, right-to-left reading order. They claim this series is “the longest-running manga in the US”, and I can believe it. The volume also contains creator commentary, fan art, and letters, and there’s a preview available on their website.

Superhero readers, if, like me, you’re paling on the New 52 DC reboot, you may find some comfort in DC Universe: Secret Origins (DC Comics, $39.99). This hardcover has over 300 pages of Silver Age origin stories from the old Giant-sized Secret Origins #1, More Secret Origins #1, Even More Secret Origins #1 (naming originality!), and Weird Secret Origins #1. We’re promised stories about “Wonder Woman, the Superman/Batman team, The Challengers of the Unknown, Martian Manhunter, the Justice League of America, Aquaman, The Flash, The Atom, Bizarro, and more!” Should be a lovely walk down memory lane.
