Batman Returns to Cartoons in CG

Can you believe Cartoon Network is 20 years old? They’re also the #1 TV channel among boys 6-11 years old, at least in early prime time (7-9 PM). And they’re announcing plans for new and returning series.

You can read the whole lineup in Heidi’s post on the subject, but the only one that stands out to me is yet another Batman animated series. Beware the Batman will be CG animated and is being promoted as “a cool, new take on the classic Dark Knight franchise”. Here’s more from the press release:

Beware the Batman incorporates Batman’s core characters with a rogues gallery of new villains not previously seen in animated form. Along with backup from ex-secret agent Alfred and lethal swordstress Katana, the Dark Knight faces the twisted machinations of Gotham City’s criminal underworld led by the likes of Anarky, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad and Magpie.

I’m curious who will be voicing the title hero. I also giggled at the use of the word “swordstress”, since they had to emphasize that Katana’s a Girl!

Additional new shows include DreamWorks Dragons: The Series, a spinoff of How to Train Your Dragon, and planned for 2013, another Lego co-production in an attempt to replicate the success of Ninjago. Sadly, missing from the returning show list is Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated. I hope that’s an oversight, because there’s plenty of mystery left!

Guess they had to emphasize Katana’s gender since nobody in the general public’s probably heard of her (though she did appear in “Batman: Brave and the Bold”)…

I wish they’d consider a Superman series; it’s been way too long since he’s had an animated series, while this must mark the fourth Batman animated series since “Batman:TAS/The New Batman Adventures” (“Batman Beyond,” “The Batman,” “Brave and the Bold”)…

A bit surprised Thundercats in not on the list. (It is currently my favorite cartoon.)

While I like the show, I’m not a fan of the cheap CGI in Green Lantern. I expect “Beware the Batman” will be more of the same.
