Jamie S. Rich has announced the upcoming release of Bobby Pins and Mary Janes, his fifth novel. (The previous were Cut My Hair, The Everlasting, I Was Someone Dead, and Have You Seen The Horizon Lately?) Although fiction, the book promises to portray “a life within the world of indie comics, complete with moody editors, sensitive cartoonists, and more than a little four-color romance.” It’s the story of Parker Reid, a twenty-something figuring out what she wants out of life and love. Sounds intriguing!

Even more fascinating is the release strategy: The book will be serialized online beginning April 27, or you may download a PDF of each new section for transfer to your favorite ebook reader.

For visual interest, Joëlle Jones has designed the characters for the “Valerie Flames” comic series described within the book, intended to be similar to Nancy Drew mixed with Tintin. Jones and Rich previously worked together on You Have Killed Me, 12 Reasons Why I Love Her, and his most recent comic project, Spell Checkers. I have previously interviewed Jamie Rich for this site.

CoolI really enjoyed his Cut My Hair novel, and this does sound intriguing. Jones is a new artist (to me anyway) but I love what I’ve seen of her work so far.

Jones is one of those artists whose work I will follow often regardless of the subject. She’s very talented.

Only thing I’ve read from her is 12 Reasons I Love her, plus some great sketches on twitter. She has such a fun, open style.
