Brave Emphasizes Self-Determination With Merida Clip
April 12, 2012

Disney/Pixar has released the following clip to promote Brave, in theaters June 22.

Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) is the newest Princess in the Disney stable, but she’s a bit more determined and self-aware than some of their others. Her willfulness is symbolized by her wild hair (a sign of Pixar’s animation skill), and she’s got a useful skill, archery, that’s hot right now (due to the success of The Hunger Games). I’d have rather seen Pixar’s first female-starring movie NOT be a fairy tale, but I’m still curious to see the film.

I love the wild-eyed look in this concept art by Shading Art Director Tia Kratter and Character Art Director Matt Nolte. This drawing was created to define Merida’s everyday, informal dress.

I’m not sure it is a fairy tale. A supernatural element has been teased in the trailers, but not confirmed…

Wait, I just checked Wikipedia, and it appears that people working on it call it a fairy tale. So I guess it is…

The trailer talks about a princess and a curse, so that’s enough for me. :) I am glad that they’re not emphasizing romance or marrying her off, too.

The preview had people competing for her hand in marriage But then has her enter the competition herself. So that seems to be part of the plot, but with a modern twist.
