The current Warbird is the woman who showed up as Kid Gladiator’s chaperone when he enrolled at the school. She’s a Jason Aaron creation but he hasn’t done a great deal with her yet.

@chris – You’re right on both counts (though I think Deathbird’s status is “was” at the moment), but the current Warbird/Shi’ar who’s way too fond of sharp objects is the one on the covers above.

I've read only a few X-Men comics in the last dozen years, but I thought that 1) Warbird was a name formerly used by Carol Danvers, and 2) there's a Shi’ar warrior named Deathbird, who has similar marks below her eyes, purple head feathers, and fair skin.

Well, looking at the art, I’d guess Kyle’s expression is caused by the shock of realizing that his boyfriend has been replaced by a mutated amalgam of Stretch Armstrong and a bowl of mashed potatoes.

Oh, thanks for enlightening me. I do read both the X-Men titles, but apparently I haven’t been paying close enough attention. I guess I should re-read those handy cast pages they’re putting in now, with all the characters listed.

The cover that’s been making the rounds is the Weaver version; I don’t think the Djurdjevic has been unveiled yet.

The featherhead is a Shi’ar warrior named, appropriately enough, Warbird. She’s over in Wolverine and the X-Men as well as Astonishing, but I can’t say I’m a fan.

I am enjoying Astonishing, though; I’m indifferent to half of the cast, but love the other half.
