This trailer for the upcoming Wreck-It Ralph, due November 2 from Disney, looks terrific.

Basically, it’s what if the gorilla from Donkey Kong was a guy (perfectly voiced by John C. Reilly) who got bored of his job and started wandering through other video games. The group therapy session, with the Pac-Man ghost, made me laugh.

More devout gamers than I likely recognize a lot more of the characters, or who they’re homaging. All I get is the dragon-y guy from Mario Brothers. Great music choice, too, with The Talking Heads’ “Once in a Lifetime” capturing both the feeling of redundancy (“same as it ever was”) and that 80s era.

Ralph winds up in a first-person shooter, where the amazing Jane Lynch runs a squad. I so share his wondering “when did video games become so violent and scary?” This movie looks like a fun alternative.

I recognized the Pac-Man ghost monster, Koopa (the “dragon-y guy” from Super Mario Bros.), the Russian guy (from “Street Fighter”), and Dr. Robotnik (from Sonic the Hedgehog).

Looks like a fun film…

Not sure… though looks a bit like the one in my “Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing” game (a few levels using as a race track the set/zombies from some game called “House of the Dead”).

Since I wasn’t clear earlier, Dr. Robotnik = the heavy-set guy with the red suit, goggles, and bushy mustache. (No, I refuse to call him “Dr. Eggman” as modern Sonic stuff apparently does… :-p ).

Going clockwise from Ralph, I think it’s:
Diablo from the series of the same name, possibly
I have no idea
Bowser/King Koopa from the Mario games
Zangief from the Street Fighter series (what’s he doing at Bad-Anon?)
Dr. Robotnik from the Sonic series
M. Bison from the Street Fighter series
Clyde from Pac-Man (or possibly Sue from Ms. Pac-Man, but she tends to be purple in games where both Clyde and Sue appear)
I have no idea, but I’m sure I should know this one…
Either a Blood Elf or a Night Elf from World of Warcraft; no idea if she’s a specific character or generic, since I don’t play the game
No idea on the next two beyond that the green thing looks like a Beholder
Possibly Nemesis from the Resident Evil series
And what might be a House of the Dead zombie.

I’m a gamer and can’t say I recognize any more of them than Kevin does.

Zangief’s probably in there because he was a villain in the Street Fighter movie and because Russian accents are funnier than Thai accents. (Bison’s Thai, right? Or do you just fight him in Thailand?)
