How Free Comic Book Day Began

Joe Field, founder of Free Comic Book Day, has sent out a link to this short (six-minute) documentary, shot in May 2012 by Cindy Custodio of Dusty Caravan Productions. Accompanied by footage of crowds of customers seeking free comics — the kind of scene familiar to anyone who’s participated in the day — he tells how the event began, looking back from its tenth anniversary. Also appearing are Georges Jeanty (artist on Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Zack Whedon (Serenity). It’s more marketing than history, but it’s also a great reminder of how the national comic holiday got started. I’m still surprised everyone managed to pull together to make it happen.
