How to Train Your Dragon, the 2010 animated DreamWorks movie (that I still haven’t seen yet), has inspired quite the franchise. The film is the story of Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel), a Viking teen who befriends the dragon he’s supposed to kill. There has been a short direct-to-DVD Christmas sequel set, Gift of the Night Fury and Book of Dragons, and beginning on September 4 on the Cartoon Network, an animated TV series.
DreamWorks Dragons: Riders of Berk will also feature Baruchel as well as a number of other kid characters, all with their own dragons. A total of 20 episodes are planned for the first season. You can watch the first two episodes at the CN website, or here’s a much shorter trailer:
It’s an obvious tie-in, with so much one can do with kids and their pet dragons, and the animation looks nifty for a TV show. There will also be a film sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2, due to be released in June 2014.
