Upcoming DC Animated Films for 2013
October 22, 2012

When it comes to the direct-to-video original animated films set in the DC Universe, we knew that there was a sequel coming to Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, but Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has released news of additional titles planned for 2013.

First, here’s the trailer for Dark Knight Returns Part 2, highlighting the Batman/Superman showdown:

It’s due in early 2013 (where “early” means January/February). Mid-year comes Superman: Unbound, based on Superman: Brainiac by Geoff Johns, originally published in Action Comics #866-870 and illustrated by Gary Frank. (Spoiler: this was also the story where Pa Kent died.)

Later in 2013 (second half), it’s Justice League: Flashpoint, again based on a story by Geoff Johns (Flashpoint).

I’m tempted to wonder where the films based on the new DC 52 comics are, but they haven’t been around long enough to develop the kind of following they want for these movies, and their takes on reestablishing the icons would only confuse viewers. Then again, by doing Flashpoint, they may be setting the stage to change the character versions, the same way the comic book company did.

If you’d rather see something much odder, there’s also going to be a Lego Batman movie called Lego Batman: The Movie — DC Super Heroes Unite. Trailer follows:

The Lego people are cute but evil, in the case of Lex Luthor and the Joker, and it’s awfully weird seeing them move. Still, at least it’s got a sense of humor — that last scene is hilarious! — and there’s something intriguing about them knowing they’re in a constructed world, as bricks come apart around them.

I’m torn. We finally get a Flash animated movie…and it’s Flashpoint.

Indeed, Kelson! If they wanted an angst-fest among the fanbase, this will do it!

Note also that they’re tagging it a Justice League movie, to give it wider appeal.

I thought Justice League Doom was based on the new 52 because of cyborgs involvement. I had actually heard rumors of DC quitting the animation side of things anyone know if this is true?

Kelson writes:

“Justice League: Doom” was based on JLA: Tower of Babel by Mark Waid from 2000. They juggled the lineup to match the current comics – the original story not only didn’t have Cyborg, but it had Kyle as Green Lantern and Wally as the Flash.

[…] This part of the film will feature Batman’s battles against both the Joker (voiced by Michael Emerson, Person of Interest, Lost) and Superman (Mark Valley, Human Target, Fringe). Also appearing in this installment is Conan O’Brien as talk show host Dave Endochrine. Batman is voiced by Peter Weller, continuing from the previous film, with Ariel Winter as Robin. I’ve previously linked to the trailer. […]

im so glad flashpoint will be come out thid year cant wait to see aquaman and wonder woman go at it and see thomas waynes take on batman and his wife as the joker also i hope booster gold will be in it too and the comic was great with grifter leading the resistance soi hope they pretty much stick with the original story and not change it to much iloved flashpoint and i really like the new 52 they had tokeep it fresh so this was how they did it and if anyone has been reading all the books like me it reallybrings the dc universe together much more than it used to.ohand i hope that dc will be smart and do a animal man and swamp thing movie based on the rotword storyline because its probablythe best story in comics right now i love having the jla and teen titan as crazy looking rot monsters i cant waittill they start doing some new 52 animation i dont think dc will give up the animated movies cause they are selling pretty well for them and when things sell they rarely go away
