Manga Author Named French Knight

Leiji Matsumoto

Leiji Matsumoto, creator of space pirate Captain Harlock, was recently awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France in recognition of the series’ “wide influence on French popular culture”. This award is intended to recognize important figures in the arts, including film, literature, and music.

You may also recognize Matsumoto’s name as the creator of Galaxy Express 999 or Space Battleship Yamato, which became Star Blazers in the U.S. An animated remake of Captain Harlock is due out next year. You can find out more in this press release.

  1. French-language TV-watchers in Canada – perhaps in France as well? – would recognize Captain Harlock by another name: Albator, le Corsair d’Espace.

  2. Yep, Albator/Captain Harlock aired in France. It made a huge impression on the members of Daft Punk when they were kids; thus their collaboration with Matsumoto on Interstella 5555.

Danguard A also aired in the States and Canada, under the title “Danguard Ace.” The robot also appeared in Marvel’s Shogun Warriors comic, but that had nothing to do with the original.
