Lovelace Biopic Tells a Story of the Porn Industry
July 10, 2013

Out August 9 is Lovelace, a look at the life of porn star Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried). The star of Deep Throat was first a champion of the medium before revealing that she was abused and controlled by her husband and manager, Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard). The film is described as follows:

In 1972 — before the internet, before the porn explosion — Deep Throat was a phenomenon: the first scripted pornographic theatrical feature film, featuring a story, some jokes, and an unknown and unlikely star, Linda Lovelace. Escaping a strict religious family, Linda discovered freedom and the high-life when she fell for and married charismatic hustler Chuck Traynor. As Linda Lovelace she became an international sensation — less centerfold fantasy than a charming girl-next-door with an impressive capacity for fellatio. Fully inhabiting her new identity, Linda became an enthusiastic spokesperson for sexual freedom and uninhibited hedonism. Six years later she presented another, utterly contradictory, narrative to the world—and herself as the survivor of a far darker story.

I’m curious to see it. They seem to be pitching Lovelace’s story as a microcosm of the sexual revolution’s ups and downs. Ever since Swingtown, I’ve been thinking about how pop culture processes the 70s — it was a time of liberation, but one that many who lived through it have had to reassess. Did all that pleasure produce unforeseen damages? This story seems tailor-made for showing the downside, but at the same time, it’s hard to avoid glorifying the sex when it’s put onscreen. (Think Boogie Nights.)

The movie is written by Andy Bellin, who only has one previous credit (Trust). The co-directors, Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, are best known for documentaries, including The Celluloid Closet. Here’s the trailer:

Casting is interesting, with Linda’s parents played by Robert Patrick and Sharon Stone (who knows herself about visual exploitation). Hank Azaria is the Deep Throat director, while Adam Brody is Linda’s movie co-star and James Franco portrays Hugh Hefner. Other stars include Chloe Sevigny, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, and Debi Mazar.

I keep thinking this is about Ada Lovelace, getting really excited, then having my hopes dashed. Seriously, it happens like once a month.
