Digital Manga has made the first three volumes — not chapters, volumes — of Give My Regards to Black Jack by Shuho Sato downloadable for free, or you can read them online. The next two volumes are just a dollar each. Digital Manga says that this is the series “in its entirety”, but the reference sites I found said the series was 13 volumes, so I don’t know exactly what that means. Perhaps just a commitment to follow it through?
The series doesn’t have any connection to Osamu Tezuka’s famous Black Jack, other than that they’re both about doctors fighting a corrupt system. Here, Saito is an intern learning how the medical profession works and having his images of ethical practice deflated.
It’s a very dramatic read, since we’re dealing with life and death situations, layered over with greed and money. Some may find it too exaggerated. Some of the faces are similarly caricatured, sometimes for no good reason. I found it interesting to find out how the Japanese medical industry differs from the one I’m used to, if awfully depressing to see “behind the scenes” in how venal the motivations for the decisions can be.
Katherine Dacey had a more in-depth review last year, if you’d like to know more. Or just read it yourself. There’s a preview even if you don’t want to sign up and sign in for the free editions.Similar Posts: Black Jack Book 5 § Win Free Black Jack! § *Black Jack Book 1 — Recommended § Viz Puts Selected Digital Manga Titles on Sale Mondays in May § Give to the Hero Initiative for Jack Kirby’s Birthday
