Marvel Motion Comics Continue Wolverine Focus

Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk

After the release of Wolverine: Origin last month, Shout! Factory has announced the next Marvel Knights motion comic DVD release will be Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk, due out September 10. Another Wolverine title makes sense, given this summer’s The Wolverine movie release.

I hadn’t thought about Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk since its release, since it was notorious for taking a ridiculous amount of time to continue, probably because it was written by Damon Lindelof (Lost), whom one assumes had other responsibilities drawing his attention. The miniseries debuted in December 2005, with the other issues released as follows:

  • #2, February 2006
  • #3, March 2009
  • #4, April 2009
  • #5, April 2009
  • #6, May 2009

A three-year gap between the start and finish of the series is excessive, although at least the return came out in timely fashion. The series was drawn by Leinil Francis Yu.

The Marvel Knights Animation DVD will be list-priced at $14.97 and includes one bonus feature beyond the tale: “an intimate and retrospective look at the development and production process of this amazing story.” It’s an interview with Yu and Marvel Knights Animation’s Supervising Producer Kalia Cheng. The plot synopsis is provided:

Dr. Bruce Banner (a.k.a. the Hulk) has been presumed dead since his execution, following his murderous rampage through Manhattan as the Hulk. But when reports start cropping up of an unidentified creature appearing around the globe, Nick Fury begins to get worried. Not because Banner can turn from man to unstoppable monster in seconds, but because Banner’s existence is the one secret that can bring down Fury. So Fury turns to the only man he can trust: Wolverine. And he’s only too glad to take care of Banner — by any means necessary.
