The author warned that, if you had a relationship with a black man, you might, years later, bear a black baby. And gardeners know how a corn plant can suddenly pop up in a garden where corn hasn’t been planted in years.

Explains why the king had to marry a virgin — to guarantee that any heirs to the throne were actually of the royal lineage. If you also believe in the Divine Right of Kings, this matters a great deal. But it also explains why a patrilinear society in general cared so much.
