It’s almost too late to get a copy of Clockwork Game, an impressive graphic novel by Jane Irwin about the Mechanical Turk, a chess-playing robot in the 1700s that turned out to be a hoax. Irwin has launched a Kickstarter that I’ve been remiss in not talking about before now, and as of this writing, it’s got 18 hours left to go.
The story launched as a webcomic in 2008 before going on hiatus and returning in 2011. The project has been funded twice over, so you’ll be sure to get what you preorder, and Irwin is working towards the fourth stretch goal. As she says,
If you’re wanting to support the project, please do so soon. In the future, the PDF downloads will probably be more expensive, since I’ll have to share its profit with a distributor. Additionally, the deluxe hardcovers are a one-time only offer — they’re way too expensive to produce — and I’ll only be making as many as people order, plus a few extra to round out the edition number and cover potential lost/stolen mail items. Don’t miss out!
