IDW Publishing has announced that they will be publishing an Angry Birds comic in June.
It’s a smart choice — the game characters are immediately recognizable, easy to draw, and yet have little personality, so writers won’t feel constrained. And IDW is known for their success with comics of licensed properties, including GI Joe, Ghostbusters, My Little Pony, Godzilla, Star Trek, and Transformers.
According to the press release, the game debuted in 2009, has two billion downloads of nine different editions, and has launched successful toy lines. There’s also a cartoon series and plans for a feature-length animated film from Sony Pictures. In my opinion, it’s the most successful mobile phone game, since even those without smartphones know what it is.
Creators working on the coming title will include writers Jeff Parker (Thunderbolts) and Paul Tobin (Bandette). Rovio, the game maker, also plans to apply “their unique creative vision towards the comic adaptation of Angry Birds.” (Does that mean strong brand control?) They even have an Editor-in-Chief of Comics, Jukka Heiskanen, and they’re teasing that more announcements about the series in print will be coming later this year.
They’re aiming for a fun, all-ages title — it’s a shame that that art makes many of the characters look a little mean, but I guess it is technically a fighting game.
