Marvel Goes Global With iVerse App, Not ComiXology

Marvel Comics, considering the global market, announced last month that they’re making over 100 of their titles available in 12 different languages.

Although the Marvel digital comic app is powered by ComiXology, their partner for the Marvel Global Comics app is iVerse, “an innovator and unique voice in the CMS, translation, and mobile publishing arenas.” The 12 languages are Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, Russian, Hindi, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Hebrew. ComiXology has a prominent French app, but I’m not aware of their efforts in other languages.

There are no specifics about how frequently the app will be updated, just a note that “additional platform releases [are] tentatively scheduled for later in 2014.” This is my favorite paragraph of puffery:

This multi-year agreement reinforces Marvel’s position both as one of the leading global entertainment brands and as the premier comic book publisher in the world, while also bringing its unparalleled library of popular characters and acclaimed stories to the widest possible global audience.

Based on the press release, the emphasis is on the mass media characters, with mention of the Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, and Wolverine, all movie features.
