C2E2: Athlitacomics Brings Protectors #1, Win a Copy Signed by Israel Idonije

Israel Idonije, Chicago Bears defensive lineman, appeared at C2E2 to debut a special limited edition #1 of his series The Protectors, put out by Athlitacomics.

The Protectors #1 cover

Idonije came up with the idea during training camp years ago. The series combines two basic concepts — sports heroes and super heroes — into an adventure where athletic stars get superpowers. The comic is created by two long-standing professionals; Ron Marz writes and Bart Sears draws. Marz, when I spoke to him, was excited and “reinvigorated” to be working on the book, saying that it gave him the same excitement he had reading classic hero teams as a kid. It seems like a great concept for younger readers.

This #1 issue has some establishing setup and character profiles of the five team members — a player each from football, basketball, baseball, soccer (the woman), and hockey. There’s a five-issue arc to start, and the company plans to announce a publishing deal soon. Most importantly, I have a copy signed by Idonije and Marz to give away to one lucky reader. If you’re interested in entering this contest, please leave a comment below with your favorite sports comic — Eyeshield 21? Tank McNamara? NFL SuperPro? Whatever it is, let me know before Friday, May 2, at 5 PM Eastern.

Hmm there have actually been some really good comics that have had sports as a part of them. Avengers V.1 Annual #16 that ends with the team playing a baseball game in the Astrodome.

NFL SuperPro was more fun than you think, and in Crucible The Comet was a minor league baseball player was a good play. Of course Speed Racer started off as a manga before it became the animated series juggernaut it did..

But my favorite sport comic has to be The X-Men under Claremont. They played baseball quite a bit, 5 or 6 times I think, and even football (at Scott and Jean’s wedding) and basketball on occasion.

  4. Seth Engelhardt Says:

To be honest, I’m entering because every sports comic I read sucked and I’m trying to find one that doesn’t.

Hi! You mentioned Eyeshield 21, and that was my favorite sports comic for a while because I’ve always been a huge football fan. But, to be honest, for over a year now my favorite sports comic is truly without a doubt The Protectors. I have been a Chicago Bears fan since the 80s and when I heard Idonije was creating a comic book dealing with sports, I was all in. I respect what Idonije does with his charity and appreciate his creativity and his decision to follow his dream by helping others not only with his charity, but also with his comic book characters. Being a Bears fan, of course I have the #1 issue of Lance Briggs’ graphic novel SERAPH and am hoping for more from him. I also have the signed #0 issue of my favorite comic, which I will forever support, The Protectors. And I can’t wait to open up and read Issue #1. Join the Fight!

I actually haven’t read any sports comics, but I am looking for a great comic book series to start and this sounds like the one!

  7. MJ Says:

Don’t have a favorite sports comic.. only one I’ve really read is the WWE Heroes series.. but hoping THE PROTECTORS might fill that void. Would love to win a copy!

  8. Johanna Says:

Thanks to everyone for entering! I agree, it can be hard to find a good sports comic, but I appreciate hearing others talk about possibilities.

I’ve selected and emailed the winner. Thanks for visiting the site!
