  1. If we’re talking just your classic shoujo schoolroom romance, I’d have to say my favorite is Kimi ni Todoke. I feel like that in the hands of any other creator, this story would be infuriatingly tedious and cliché, but somehow Karuho Shiina just makes everything work and makes it all just so touching and sweet and low-key and oddly compelling to read.

  2. For me, that’s Kare Kano. The story of Yukino and Arima still sticks with me long after I read the manga years ago, and I felt the story is a perfect combination of romantic comedy and a coming-of-age story between young lovers and friends.

My Love Story!! looks so cute! :3

  3. gonna have to go with Blankets on this one, though I read that a few years ago when I was 19 and I think it’s possible that if I read it again it won’t be nearly as good.

  4. You just say young romance, not YR books. So I’ll say movies since I have a hard time thinking of many of those in books or comics.(I’d actually like to see more or well any modern romance comics)

Tough to choose movies, I love Say Anything but I think I’ll go with 10 Things I Hate About You.

TV wise I’ve just started watching GREEK, which I love.

  5. Jasmine Westbrook

My favorite young romance is Haruhi Fujioka and Tamaki South from Our an High School Host Club. >.< I find it so cute how he wants her, and she's just like "Whatever," for most of it.

  6. Abigail Tarun

I’ll say Nagisa Furukawa and Tomoya Okazaki from Clannad.

  7. My vote is for “Young Romance”, the Simon & Kirby title from the 1940s. I’m a sucker for Kirby work, regardless of the genre! :)

  8. I’m also going with Kimi ni Todoke, because even though there’s nothing really new about the premise or the plot points, everything still feels refreshing because everyone’s just so NICE. The main boy’s a total sweetie, the BFFs are great, even the mean rival girl’s not so bad. I love the weird sort of camaraderie and respect she and Sawako have for each other.

  9. Thanks, everyone, for participating. I’ve drawn and emailed a winner.

And yeah, any kind of young romance was eligible — thanks, James, for reminding me of how great 10 Things I Hate About You was.

I wish I’d been able to get more into Kimi ni Todoke, because it sounds like something I should love, but it never clicked with me.

  10. ^KnT probably wouldn’t have clicked with me either, were it not for its total lack of cynicism or any meanspiritedness. At the time in my life when I read it, it was just what I needed. :)

  11. Isn’t it wonderful when you find just the book you need when you need it?
