Junction True

I have just read the creepiest graphic novel I’ve seen in a long time. I normally stay far away from this kind of material, but I couldn’t put Junction True down. Ray Fawkes (Possessions, One Soul) writes and Vince Locke (The Sandman, A History of Violence) illustrates this creepy tale of body modification, relationship dependency, sadism, and revenge. Warren Ellis fans should love it.

Parasite implantation is the latest rage, allowing worms into your body to create visual effects under the skin. Journal broadcaster Dirk Brody is obsessed with the gorgeous, remote Teralyn, to the extent of agreeing to a life-changing implant that will tie them together. She’s more interested in chasing the new and trendy, though, than responding to his love. Meanwhile, Dirk’s friend Suka is reporting on the down side of these changes and implants gone wrong.

There’s a lot you don’t know about exactly what everyone is talking about, and that contributes to the feeling of being set in the future. When you can’t even keep up with fringe trends today, of course those coming would be even more confusing.

The painted art gives everything a layer of beauty over the disgust and repulsion most readers will feel. One can read all kinds of metaphors into the text, none very pleasant, about confusing obsession for love and dependency and abuse and carelessness with the feelings of others, under the layers of body horror and the dangers of new technology, misused by the young.
