Baby-Sitters Club Graphic Novel Adaptations to Continue
Raina Telgemeier, the woman who has revolutionized the graphic novel market by putting out approachable graphic memoirs that have been best-sellers for years, first came to public notice by adapting and drawing comic adaptations of four early Baby-Sitters Club books. The first one came out in 2006, but her later work — Smile and Sisters in particular — became so popular that they reissued her versions in color last year. The four books were
- Kristy’s Great Idea
- The Truth About Stacey
- Mary Anne Saves the Day
- Claudia and Mean Janine
In the novel series, they are, respectively, numbers 1, 3, 4, and 7.
Now, there will be two more Baby-Sitters Club graphic novels, but these two will be done by Gale Galligan, a Sequential Art graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design who has a webcomic called Patbird and Galesaur. She was a production assistant on Raina’s Drama, establishing a connection. As tweeted today by Graphix, the Scholastic graphic novel imprint,

There will be another. My guesses for which one it will be are Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls (#2) or Kristy’s Big Day (#6). Or perhaps they’ll go forward, with #8, Boy-Crazy Stacey. That’s a great title, anyway.
Update: Here’s the formal announcement, that includes the news that Galligan will also be doing two original graphic novels for the publisher, Breakaway and Hazel, for a total of four books in the deal. Below is promotional art Galligan has done of the characters.

When will The Babysitters Club graphic novel #6 be available?

Given that the fifth, Dawn and the Impossible Three, only came out three months ago, and it takes at least a year to draw a graphic novel, I would think we’re looking at mid to late next year at the earliest. I don’t believe an official date has been announced.
