Marvel Tsum Tsum Comic Due in August

Do you know the tsum tsums? They were originally a Japanese invention, a simplification of various Disney characters into fist-sized stuffed bean shapes (although now they have medium and large-sized ones, which start resembling pillows). Disney has spun these out into Star Wars and Marvel lines in addition to the various animated characters.

According to Wikipedia, “the name is derived from the Japanese verb tsumu meaning “to stack”, because the toys are designed to stack on top of each other, forming a pyramid shape.” It’s kind of a genius invention, because the simple shapes translate well, including to mobile games, and once you have one, you want to get friends for it.

Now Marvel will be putting out a four-issue miniseries featuring the superhero versions of these little beanies. Marvel Tsum Tsum #1 launches in August, written by Jacob Chabot and drawn by David Baldeon. This is billed as “an in-continuity tale of these stackable sensations as they come face-to-face with their super hero counterparts, and the Marvel Universe at large!”

So it’s also a crossover! The cover, by Chris Samnee, (shown below) suggests a team-up. I just like Tsum Tsum Hulk flying through the air while Thor snuggles Captain America like a football. Here’s the description:

So what happens when the Marvel Tsum Tsums find their way into the Marvel Universe? When a crate of these pint-sized piles of fur accidentally falls to Earth en route to The Collector, one small group of Brooklyn teenagers will find out! Oh — and did we mention the Marvel Tsum Tsums believe they’re the real Marvel Heroes?

I imagine that the people that thought the X-Babies were going too far in cuteness are having their heads explode right about now. It’s because Marvel and Disney need spin-off material to sell to game players, I suspect.

“We could not be more thrilled with the success of the Marvel Tsum Tsum game in Japan,” says Marvel VP of International Development, CB Cebulski. “The launch of the Marvel Tsum Tsum limited series is a testament to our close working relationship with Disney Japan and the strength of the Marvel brand across Asia.”

“Thanks to all the fans, Marvel Tsum Tsum has been the #1 downloaded free game in Japan for nearly two months,” says Marvel Games Creative Director, Bill Rosemann. “We’re happy to bring that excitement to the limited series along with a set of variant covers based on the unique art style of the game!”
