Viz Manga Available Through Digital Library Service

Naruto Volume 1

Want to borrow Viz manga titles for your e-reader? OverDrive is the leading digital distribution platform for libraries, “supplying the industry’s largest catalog of eBooks, audiobooks, streaming video, and periodicals to 34,000 libraries, schools, and retailers worldwide, including 90 percent of all public libraries in the U.S.” Viz Media has just announced that they will use OverDrive to provide their “most popular digital manga titles” to libraries in the U.S. and Canada.

These are mainstream properties, for now, with 146 entries included (of which 72 are Naruto!) in the list available to borrow. Other titles are

  • Deadman Wonderland
  • Kiss of the Rose Princess
  • Library Wars
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • The Demon Prince of Momochi House
  • and Vampire Knight.

It does appear that they’re including all volumes of a series, at least, so no reader frustration there. I’ll be curious to see how often the list is updated and how quickly new titles arrive, since they promise updates throughout the year.

I find the library a great source for reading series like this where I may want to follow along but don’t necessarily need to own all the books. (Space is a premium! And 72 books at $10 each…) Now, at least at my branch, checkouts can be done from the privacy of my home with digital lending. Check with your local library to see if they’re participating in this program. Keep in mind that they still have to pay for this access, so it might not be available immediately.
