Wizard World Chicago Coming in August With Movie/TV Guests, Variant Comics

Wizard World is no longer a comic convention, but I’m interested in some of the guests and programming they’ve started announcing for Wizard World Chicago, held August 18-21.

Carrie Fisher (Star Wars) will make her first ever Wizard World appearance there. Plus, there’s a Back to the Future reunion with Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Lea Thompson scheduled. Another reunion is one for The X-Files, with Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, Mitch Pileggi, and William B. Davis.

The cast of Daredevil — Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock/Daredevil), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle/The Punisher), Elodie Yung (Elektra Natchios), and Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple) — are also planned to appear, as well as Rose McIver (iZombie).

Tickets are $40 for Thursday or Sunday, $50 for Friday, and $60 for Saturday. (Note that some of the special guests are only appearing on select days.) It’s $95 for a weekend pass, and all prices are before taxes and fees. You can buy VIP packages for a photo op with a selected guest, or Wizard World has its own VIP packages for $250 a person. That’s where the nod to comics comes in, as only those purchasers get special variant cover editions.

For Chicago, the variants are exclusive black & white versions of Batman #50 and Superman #50 with Patrick Gleason’s art. They’re limited to the first 800 VIPs. Both Gleason covers are homages to work by Jim Lee — Batman #608 (2nd Print) and Superman #204. I think that says something about the state of comics today, that a “valuable” collectible occurs when one guy takes another guy’s layout, redraws it, and they take the color out of it. Still, if you have the right contacts, I imagine that reselling these covers might help pay for some of that $250 admission fee.
