Red Sonja Expands Motion Comics for Shout! Factory

Red Sonja: Queen Of Plagues

When motion comics started, several publishers were doing them, but then Marvel ran away with the format, putting out a number of X-Men and Wolverine titles with Shout! Factory. I haven’t seen any yet this year — although I admit, I’m not a huge fan so I don’t pay close attention — so I was surprised to note that last week, Red Sonja: Queen of Plagues was released.

For one thing, I was surprised to see them still coming out (although the term “motion comic” isn’t actually used in the description), and for another, it’s not something from Marvel. The “iconic fantasy heroine” is “brought to life in this animated comic” written by Gail Simone, illustrated by Walter Geovani, and originally published by Dynamite. Here’s the plot description:

Red Sonja: Queen Of Plagues

Red Sonja, the She-Devil with a Sword, intends to pay back a blood debt owed to the one man who has gained her respect… even if it means leading a doomed army to their certain deaths! Who is Dark Annisia, and how has this fearsome warrior accomplished what neither god nor demon has been able to do: force Sonja to her knees in surrender? An epic tale of blood, lust, and vengeance, Queen of the Plagues takes Red Sonja from the depths of her own grave to the heights of battlefield glory.

I’m not going to watch it, since I don’t care much for fantasy and I don’t like the character, but if you’re interested in the package, note that there’s also a featurette that includes interviews with Simone and the cast and crew.

The original comic has been out in trade for awhile now. I think the individual issues first came out in summer 2013.

I do think the story would make for a fantastic animated film. So I was a bit disappointed to find out it’s a motion comic.

I also wonder why they are being so coy about the villain? Dark Annisia is a female.
