Suicide Squad as a Waltz?!?

I watch Dancing With the Stars for two reasons — first, it’s something my mother and I can share talking about, which is nice, and second, I used to dance. (Competed internationally once in college.) Most of the “stars” aren’t really celebrities — heck, I haven’t heard of more than half of them each season — but they do all kinds of interesting costuming and scoring for theme nights.

Last night, of course, was Halloween, so there was a nifty Beetlejuice-themed cha-cha and a jazz number to “Little Shop of Horrors”… but the one that really caught my eye was a waltz, set to “You Don’t Own Me”, with a Suicide Squad theme.

That’s unusual because Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC, a Disney company (which is why many seasons have a young person who’s worked on their kid TV shows). While they have a Disney night each season, I don’t recall seeing many other companies’ characters. Warner Bros., in particular, who owns DC and the Suicide Squad movie, is a big competitor.

Anyway, here’s James Hinchcliffe, a race car driver who is one of the best celebrity dancers they’ve had, as the Joker with Jenna Johnson as Harley Quinn. She wasn’t even his regular partner; Sharna Burgess had a knee injury that kept her from dancing. (Ignore the erroneous caption.) I like the synchronized arm movements at the end!

I guess they couldn’t get the rights to Tom Leher’s “The Masochism Tango”…

“While they have a Disney night each season, I don’t recall seeing many other companies’ characters. Warner Bros., in particular, who owns DC and the Suicide Squad movie, is a big competitor.”

They’ve done Game-of-Thrones themed dances a coupla times over the years–once earlier this season even–and I recall a Harry Potter-theme dance awhile back, and both of those are as high-profile Time Warner/HBO properties as you could name.

DWTS obviously won’t pass up opportunities for synergy with other Disney properties, but they’re obviously not averse to going beyond their own content for a number here or there.

  • Thanks for the reminder. I had forgotten those because I didn’t care about the source material. :)

D’oh! How could I have forgotten Alfonso Ribeiro’s epic Batman DWTS dance from a few seasons back?
