Doctor Strange Blu-ray Details Announced

Doctor Strange 3-D Blu-ray combo pack

The specifics for the home video release of Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the medical mystic, have been announced. The movie has made more than $650 million worldwide, making it “the biggest single-character introduction in the Marvel Cinematic Universe” and the 14th consecutive Marvel movie to open at #1 domestically. You probably already know the plot description:

the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident renders his hands useless. When traditional medicine fails him, he travels to the remote Kamar-Taj in search of a cure, but instead discovers the mystical arts and becomes a powerful sorcerer battling dark forces bent on destroying our reality.

There are four versions available: digital, DVD (with no bonus materials), a Blu-ray combo pack (which thankfully has returned to having a DVD and digital version included), and a 3-D Blu-ray combo pack, labeled the “Cinematic Universe Edition”. (No list prices have been announced.)

As usual, the digital version comes out earlier, on February 14, while the home video discs are due February 28. There is also a digital-exclusive extra: “Through the Keyhole: The Science of the MCU – Discover how Marvel grounds all its films in real science, and explore the connection between science, magic, and imagination.”

The extras include “five behind-the-scenes featurettes, five deleted scenes, hilarious outtakes [aka a gag reel], part two of the comical mockumentary ‘Team Thor’, audio commentary, and an exclusive look at the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” The featurettes are:

  • A Strange Transformation — Open your eye to a new dimension of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and see how the filmmakers brought one of comic books’ greatest characters to life.
  • Strange Company — Find out what it’s like for the cast to work on a Marvel film, and how director Scott Derrickson engineered one of the most ambitious, imaginative films ever.
  • The Fabric of Reality — Take a closer look at the movie’s extraordinary sets, meticulously crafted costumes, and amazingly detailed production elements.
  • Across Time and Space — Explore the countless hours of dance and fight choreography the actors endured in preparation for their physically demanding roles.
  • The Score-cerer Supreme — Join Composer Michael Giacchino and a full orchestra during live recording sessions, and experience the movie’s mind-bending music.

The deleted scenes are “Strange Meets Daniel Drumm”, “Kaecilius Searches for Answers”, “The Kamar-Taj Courtyard”, “Making Contact”, and “Lost in Kathmandu”. The commentary is by Derrickson, the director (sadly, it seems no one wants to pay the stars extra for the work of making extras these days). The MCU future promises “an early peek at Marvel’s spectacular upcoming films, including Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War.”

The Team Thor second part (featuring more with Chris Helmsworth as the Norse god and his roommate Darryl (Daley Pearson)) is a bit weird to include, since part one was a digital exclusive for Captain America: Civil War, so you can’t watch it on disc. But you can watch it on YouTube:
